Experience time through fragrance.― Awaji Island's Incense Brand "SOZO"

Have you ever lit an incense stick and had the fragrance change midway through?――"SOZO" (pronounced soh-zoh), created by Shinkoh Inc., an incense manufacturer on Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture, is a groundbreaking incense that features a gradual change in fragrance within a single stick. It was born from the desire for people to feel the passage of time itself, along with the fragrance.

The attitude of turning "imagination" into "creation"

The name SOZO embodies the company's approach to manufacturing: turning "imagination" (sōzō 想像) into "creation" (sōzō 創造). The idea is to take the imagination of "it would be interesting if there was an incense like this" and turn it into an actual product through the incense manufacturing technology cultivated on Awaji Island and through their own trial and error. This philosophy is reflected in the brand name.

The logo features a "door." This symbolizes the desire to step beyond the traditional wholesale framework, open their own doors, and connect with people and countries they couldn't reach before.

Development undertaken by the second generation of an incense manufacturer established in 1988

Shinkoh Inc. is an incense manufacturer based on Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture, founded in October 1988. Currently, a small team of five, including the representative, handles everything from manufacturing to packaging, shipping, and administration. SOZO was developed in-house, from planning to manufacturing, as a brand that creates new experiences not found in traditional incense, while utilizing the incense manufacturing technology cultivated over many years.

The representative is the second generation to take over the family business. Growing up watching, helping, and sometimes interfering with his father's work, and being the eldest son, he naturally felt he would one day inherit the family business. His experience in chemistry during his student days and in the chemical field in his previous job is said to be useful in his current approach to fragrance blending, raw material selection, and prototyping. After taking over the family business, he faced the reality that the demand for traditional incense was decreasing year by year due to changes in lifestyle, such as the increasing practice of grave removal. Furthermore, after the Great East Japan Earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic, his sense of crisis about relying solely on traditional incense intensified. His personality, adept at steadily and persistently seeing things through, combined with his knowledge of chemistry, are said to have supported the approximately five-year development of SOZO.

Awaji Island, one of Japan's leading incense producing regions

Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture is one of Japan's leading incense producing regions. Incense production on Awaji Island is said to have begun around 1850, when manufacturing methods were brought from Senshu Sakai to the Ei district on the west coast. The development of the incense industry in this area was favored by the relatively dry climate characteristic of the Seto Inland Sea region, as well as the strong seasonal winds blowing from the Harima Sea, which were suitable for drying incense, an essential part of the manufacturing process. Furthermore, Ei had a good port at the time, which facilitated the transport of raw materials and the shipment of finished products. The combination of natural conditions, logistics, and the accumulated skills of artisans over many years led to Awaji Island becoming a major incense producing region. SOZO also challenges itself to create incense that suits modern lifestyles, combining new ideas with the techniques inherited in this land.

A casual comment from a customer was the trigger.

Since taking over the family business, as demand for traditional incense declined, they felt that they couldn't change the situation with products that were the same as other companies' or simply focused on fragrance alone. They aimed to create something unique, unlike anything else in the world.

Amidst this, they heard casual comments from customers like, "Even if I like a scent, I get tired of it if I smell it every day, and I gradually become less able to perceive it," and "When I buy new scents, I end up with leftovers I can't finish." This sparked the idea: what if the scent changed within a single stick of incense? It would be less monotonous and more interesting. This is where the idea for SOZO was born. The moment they intuitively thought, "It would be good if the scent changed within a single stick," the idea of a scent changing midway through an incense stick was almost nonexistent at the time, and they felt that if they could achieve it, it would be truly unique. It was precisely because it was difficult that it was worth the challenge. With that in mind, development began.

"Experience time through fragrance."

The core value they want to convey with this product is encapsulated in the phrase, "Experience time through fragrance."SOZO is an "incense timer of fragrance" where the scent gradually changes within a single stick, allowing you to feel the passage of time through that change. They believe that SOZO's greatest value is not just enjoying the fragrance itself, but enriching the time spent with the changing scents.

The burning time is approximately 20 minutes. They hope to provide a moment to step away from clocks and smartphones in our busy daily lives and turn our attention to our own senses. Light it during reading, breaks from work, contemplation, or at the end of the day, and spend time feeling the changes in fragrance. It's not about 20 minutes to rush something to completion, but about 20 minutes that allow you to quietly feel "this present moment," serving as a digital detox.

Specialized machinery, created by their own hands.

SOZO's greatest originality lies in its unique manufacturing method, which connects incense sticks with different fragrances within a single stick, allowing the scent to gradually change as it burns. This technology was developed entirely in-house, and the process of connecting different fragrances is the core know-how of SOZO. Because applying for a patent would disclose the technical details, this core part is intentionally not patented and is managed as proprietary know-how within the company. On the other hand, the SOZO brand and design are protected by trademarks and designs.

To connect incense sticks with different fragrances, special equipment that could not be handled by existing facilities was necessary. They decided that they "had no choice but to make it themselves" and handmade dedicated equipment through trial and error. This self-made machine became a major breakthrough in the development.

Even if it looks like one stick, it's a failure if the scents mix.

The most challenging part of development was the process of connecting incense sticks with different fragrances into a single stick. Initially, they thought it could be done as an extension of traditional incense manufacturing technology, but for the first few years, no matter how many times they tried, the scents would mix at the connection point, preventing them from achieving the desired transition. Even if it looked like a single stick, the scent wouldn't change as intended when burned. This continued for many years.

The turning point came when they abandoned the idea of solving the problem with existing equipment. Instead of relying on external sources, they decided to create dedicated machinery for SOZO themselves. This decision led to the unique manufacturing method after approximately five years of trial and error. Even so, they did not give up on their initial idea of "the scent clearly changing within a single stick" and continued to experiment. They chose to see it through, even if it took time, until they achieved the unique experience that SOZO offers.

You only know when you burn it.

At SOZO, not only is the quality of the fragrance important, but also the compatibility when combining different fragrances within a single stick. Since the impression of a fragrance changes between when it is smelled directly and when it is burned, they always confirm the actual burned state of the incense during the selection of raw materials and fragrances. They finely adjust the blending based on three criteria: that the preceding scent does not interfere with the next, that the change in scent can be clearly felt, and that it is a pleasant experience as incense.

The most meticulous stages are the process of connecting different fragrances and the final verification when actually burning the incense. Simply being physically connected does not make it a SOZO incense. It must burn stably as a single stick, the preceding and succeeding scents must not mix excessively, and their individual differences must be perceptible. Therefore, the final judgment is always made through sensory evaluation, by actually burning the incense and confirming the transition of fragrances.

From the selection of raw materials to kneading, shaping, drying, sorting, and packaging, it takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks for a single product to be completed, depending on the season. Especially in incense making, the drying conditions change with temperature and humidity, so artisans monitor the conditions at each stage. Every process, including the state of the kneaded dough, the finish after shaping, the degree of drying, the burning state, and the final sorting, involves human eyes and hands.

Four changing fragrances, the flagship product "Shunkashūtō" (Four Seasons)

Shunkashūtō (Four Seasons)〜FOUR SEASONS〜

If you were to list three charms of SOZO, they would be: first, the unique experience of the fragrance gradually changing within a single stick; second, the ability to feel the approximately 20-minute burning time through the change in scent rather than a clock; and third, the originality of having developed the manufacturing method and key equipment in-house, based on Awaji Island's incense manufacturing technology.

In the flagship product "Shunkashūtō," four fragrances transition within a single stick: cherry blossom → lavender → osmanthus → narcissus. It expresses the four seasons of Awaji Island—spring cherry blossoms, summer lavender, autumn osmanthus, and winter narcissus—in one incense stick.

Burn it horizontally in a quiet room.

Usage image of SOZO

Place the included black non-combustible mat on a ceramic plate or similar surface that won't be damaged by ash, light the SOZO stick, and lay it horizontally on the mat to burn. Burning it horizontally in a quiet, almost windless environment makes it easier to perceive the transition of scents. It is recommended for times when you want to spend "just about 20 minutes relaxing a bit," such as during reading, work breaks, contemplation, or at the end of the day.

It's perfect not only for your own relaxation but also as a gift for fragrance lovers or those with busy daily lives. Some products, like "Shunkashūtō," express the four seasons of Japan through scent, making them popular as gifts that convey a sense of Japaneseness. It's said to be suitable for occasions where you want to give a special moment to someone, such as birthdays, thank-you gifts, seasonal presents, or gifts for people overseas.

Customers discovered a "luxurious burning" method.

Kaori (Fragrance)〜KAORI〜

There's also an unexpected way to enjoy it that a customer taught them.SOZO's "Kaori" product transitions from coffee to vanilla scent, but a customer apparently told them, "If you light both ends and lay it horizontally to burn, you can enjoy a coffee-vanilla-like scent." Originally, the product is meant to be lit from one end to enjoy the fragrance transition, so this burning method was completely unforeseen by the developers. By lighting both scents simultaneously, you can enjoy a unique layering of fragrances—a fresh and somewhat luxurious way to enjoy it, precisely because it's SOZO. This burning method has affectionately been named "luxurious burning."

The surprise that starts with, "The scent changes? No way!"

When SOZO was first launched, if they explained that "the fragrance changes within a single stick of incense," people would sometimes say, "The scent changes? No way, that's a lie!" However, once they actually experienced it by burning it, they would be surprised, saying, "It really does change clearly!" Especially with "Shunkashūtō," four fragrances transition in one stick. Since many people didn't even have the concept of such an incense, it was difficult to convey the product's appeal with words alone. On the other hand, they realize that once people experience it, that very "surprise" becomes SOZO's charm.

SOZO is not just a product where you choose a single scent; it offers the enjoyment of choosing "which fragrance transition to enjoy today." Since multiple fragrances can be enjoyed in one stick, it is also characterized by being less prone to scent fatigue. They believe that the convenient burning time of approximately 20 minutes, the stories behind each fragrance combination, and the design including the packaging are also reasons why it is chosen not only for daily use but also as a gift.

What lies ahead.

They aim to continue creating "new experiences that only our company can offer" by leveraging the unique technologies cultivated with SOZO. They also want to challenge themselves to express values that can only be conveyed through fragrance, through collaborations with art, local communities, seasons, and other industries.

"While utilizing traditional techniques and combining our new ideas, we create products that soothe people's hearts through fragrance and bring peace and richness to their daily lives. We are dedicated to contributing to society by spreading joy and gratitude to customers worldwide and taking on challenges."――This is the philosophy of Shinkoh Inc. Their immediate goal is to deliver SOZO worldwide, contribute to rich daily lives, and cultivate it into an incense loved across countries and generations for a long time. For the representative, SOZO is a child carefully raised, a partner to walk with, and a driving force for moving into the future.

Awards

SOZO received the Good Design Award in 2025. It also won the highest gold prize at the Omotenashi Selection for two consecutive years, in 2024 and 2025. The flagship product "Shunkashūtō" has also been selected as one of the "Hyogo Five Stars."

To our readers

When you light a SOZO stick, for about 20 minutes, try to step away from your clock and smartphone. We hope you'll enjoy the feeling of "time shifting" rather than just "time passing" as the fragrance gradually changes. You can read, contemplate, or simply do nothing. Why not take a break from digital devices?

SOZO was not simply created from the idea of "an interesting incense whose scent changes." Over approximately five years of trial and error, we not only developed the manufacturing method but also built the necessary machinery and equipment ourselves. Based on the traditional incense manufacturing techniques of Awaji Island, the second generation decided to "create something unprecedented" and shaped a new incense experience with their own technology. We hope you will get to know SOZO, including the story behind it. We also hope that SOZO can be a catalyst for creating a slightly more peaceful and richer time in your daily life.
